Getting started in yoga

The question is: should you do yoga and how?

The best way to find out is to join a class. Or if you prefer to try it on your own, buy a DVD.

In our Western philosophy we list three things as important for our well-being: Food, drink and oxygen. In Eastern philosophy this is reversed: Air, food and drink. If you think about this for a moment you'll realize the Eastern approach is the correct one. We can live with little or no food and drink for quite some time - we don't last several minutes without breath. Breath is life.
  • Prana is breath/life. Pranayama is the practice of breath exercises.
  • Asanas (the emphasis is on the first "a") are poses. All asanas have names, some for things like bridge, plank or circle, some for features such as tree, moon or mountain, and many are named for animals.
  • Namasta ( which translates into Peace, or Peace be with you).

Yoga fits perfectly as a solo activity that can be done anywhere, anytime. Its practice enhances all other pursuits for a healthy body and mind.
