Vitamins and minerals abundant in a healthy diet may reduce the risk of eye disorders like age-related macular degeneration (AMD).
Retina surgeon Dr. Larry Halperin said symptoms of age related macular degeneration or AMD include a blurred spot in the center of the eye, distortion of lines and a difficult time recognizing faces.
Anyone who has a family member with AMD must first have a diet that includes dark green leafy vegetables.
Secondly, according to Dr. Halperin, "A low fat diet (is important) because to some extent macular degeneration is related to the hardening of the arteries and so having a low cholesterol and a healthy diet with exercise is going to be helpful.
Thirdly, Dr. Halperin said don't smoke.
Lastly, he suggested taking vitamins especially Vitamin C, E, beta carotene and 50 milligrams of zinc daily.
