The first line of defense should include a regular exercise program, says Dr. Eric Haufrect, vice-chairman of the Department of Obstetrics/Gynecology at the Methodist Hospital in Houston.
The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommends at least 30 minutes of aerobic exercise most days to reduce period-related fatigue and depression.
Gentle yoga also can help alleviate the discomfort of PMS and menstrual cramps, says Nydia T. Darby, a licensed physical therapist and owner of Nydia's Yoga Therapy in San Antonio.
